Aertv will stream the GloHealth All Ireland Schools’ Cross Country Championships this Saturday 7th March live from Clongowes Wood College, Kildare. It is the first time this popular event will be broadcast live.

A massive 12,000 schools athletes have participated in the Championship qualifiers since January and there is huge interest in the event being broadcast live. The races begin with the minor girl’s at 12pm and concludes with the men’s universities race at 3.10pm.

Karen Howley, Live Event Producer at Aertv said; “There is a real buzz around All Ireland Schools’ events and it’s fantastic that we can live stream this fixture to fans around the globe. Competitor’s family and friends can tune in and cheer them on from wherever they are.”

The Senior Boys race at 2.40pm is expected to be the highlight of the day with a highly anticipated battle between Kevin Mulcaire (St Flannans Ennis) and Jack O’Leary of the host school at Clongowes Wood College. Mulcaire has dominated cross country running at junior level lately with recent victories at the Munster Schools (12th February) and GloHealth Inter Club Cross Country Championships (1st March). He will start as the favourite to win the title however O’Leary will no doubt be inspired by the home support and will do his upmost to challenge for the title.

Sinéad Galvin, Marketing and Communications Manager of Athletics Ireland said; “In a highly competitive sporting media environment Live Streaming enables the association to become its own broadcaster. We can showcase our great sport and reach a wide fan base at a relevant convergence point of on-line and social media.”

The intermediate and junior races have the added spice of acting as the trial for the SIAB Schools International to be held in Santry Demesne on the 21st of March. The top eight across the line will earn themselves a place on the Irish team for the international fixture.

This is the third live event of the 2015 season that Aertv and Athletics Ireland are partnering on to provide full live coverage with commentary from the energetic and witty Jumping the Gun team.

The guilt of over-indulgence is setting in for a lot of people already and I’ve already heard quite a few rumblings about New Year’s resolutions to get back in shape. RTÉ’s Operation Transformation will be starting back soon, which might give us all that bit of extra motivation.
A special episode tonight revisits some of the previous leaders from the past seven years.
It was revealed that the new series will have the youngest leader yet. Alan Mullen is only 21 and weighs 26 stone. Having lost control of his weight, he was spurred on by a cruel bet that said he would be dead by Christmas. Let’s hope he can turn that bet into something good for himself.
Until then, I’m sure we’ll all be dancing around the living room to work off a few pounds, Gangham style of course.

Three big announcements in the past couple of days from major players Apple, Netflix & HBO are really shedding light into what’s happening as we develop online TV.

The Hardware Giants

Apple just announced that they have gone all the way to 5K with their new iMac. With a resolution of 5120 x 2880, for now it would seem that this is a dream display for a Video Editor – a handful of cameras shoot in this resolution but the world has not started to publish at this quality yet. Indeed, much of today’s video that is broadcast is not even in 4K quality yet. It’s all about future-proofing and that’s what all of this week’s announcements are about.

The Visionaries

Netflix are the forerunners of delivering quality content online and introduced 4K streaming in May of this year. Price is almost always associated with quality and as their user bandwidth soars with chunky video files, these costs are finally going to be passed down to their subscribers. A new price band of €11.99 per month will be introduced next month for users who want such 4K luxuries.

The Old Timers

Traditional broadcast players have been on the edge for quite some time with offering their content online. HBO has just announced plans to introduce a streaming subscription in 2015 that has nothing to do with being a traditional HBO subscriber. It will roll out in the United States first and we don’t know exactly what the offering will be yet but one thing is certain – they are future proofing themselves.

This is a massive step for HBO to take and clearly its ringing through to them how much of a demand there is for their content globally. Game of Thrones has one of the highest illegal download records ever for a TV show.

The Bottom Line

We upgrade our TVs for higher resolution, our computers have retina displays and we’re getting fussy about the quality of content playing on our screens.

Friday, July 11th 2014

The Vampires of the Norwegian Air Force Historical Squadron, the Black Knights Defence Forces Parachute Team and aerobatic pilots from the Ravens are ready for take-off at this year’s Bray Air Display on Sunday, July 20th for Bray Summerfest, supported by the Irish Aviation Authority.

Ireland’s largest free air show takes off at 3.30pm and the display attracted a record-breaking 85,000 spectators last year, with similar numbers expected again this year. For the first time ever, the three hour display will be live streamed through Aertv.ie (link to watch here), helping the Bray Air Display reach international audiences online.

The ‘Flying Dentist’ (former aerobatic champion, Eddie Goggins) and the ‘Flying Farmer’ (former RAF pilot, Gerry Humphreys) are teaming up once again as ‘Aer Dynamics’. Their smoke-filled display promises to fill the skies with crossover loops, synchronised hammerheads and split shamrocks.

The Aer Lingus A321 is opening the show and The Twister Team trio are also making a welcome return, in their Silence Twister aircraft. The Pitts Trig Team, Stobart Air, the Sikorsky helicopter from the Irish Coast Guard, the Boeing Stearman and the so called ‘Admirals Barge’ (the Beech Expediter) will also be entertaining the large crowds expected.

A piece of aviation history will be created on Sunday (July 20), with a unique display by three vintage aircraft: the 1936 Iolar from Aer Lingus along with two Chipmunks, flying in retro Irish Air Corps colours. Meanwhile, this year’s headline acts also include the Hawker Hunter, The Strike Master and the Irish Aer Corps.

Sé Pardy, the Display Director from Simtech Aviation, said: “This year’s display programme is the most family-friendly yet, with lots of spectacular aerial action for visitors of all ages to enjoy. From vintage planes from the 1930s, 40s and 50s to high speed aerobic formations, we’re welcoming top pilots from Ireland and around the world to Bray, to showcase aviation at its very best.”

The Bray Air Display is just one of the highlights of the Bray Summerfest programme (#bsf14) which promises to be another sensational Summerfest for families and individuals of all ages. The five weekends encompass music acts and artists, Family Fiesta, open air cinema and the Wicklow Food and Garden Festival. A finale firework display closes the Bray Summerfest festival on August 4th.

Due to the large crowds expected at the Bray Air Display on July 20th, spectators are strongly advised to use DART, Dublin Bus and other public transport services as parking restrictions will be in place. Free park and ride facilities at designated car parks will be available with full details at www.braysummerfest.com

More information around the aircraft taking part in the Bray Air Display, which gets underway at 3.30pm, is available from http://www.brayairdisplay.com. There will also be further updates on AA Roadwatch, Aertv.ie and through Radio Nova. The air show event hashtag is #brayair and @BrayAirShow is the official Twitter account.
